MES provides better quality outcomes and a greater spread of variants

Empir Industry has been working with ASSA ABLOY for many years and, along with other assignments, has delivered MES solutions to their factory in the Czech Republic where control systems for industrial doors are manufactured.

– When we completed a change to lean manufacturing, we switched from a resource-intensive construction on workbenches to a assembly line where the main flow had two side lines to further expand the possibilities for variation in production. At the same time as lean manufacturing was introduced, our product range also expanded from a few products to a large number of variants. All in all, this meant that we needed a MES system to control, quality assure and follow up the manufacturing process. If the same work had to be performed manually, it would be very difficult to keep track of the different variants in production, says Anders Bryngelson, General Manager at ASSA ABLOY Entrance System Production.

ASSA ABLOY also wanted to streamline its manufacturing by removing all paperwork, thus reducing the possibility of making mistakes and getting a continuous flow between the business system, operators and machines.

How did operations work before Empir Industry's inputs?

– Previously, it was harder to work with lean manufacturing and to visualise bottlenecks in production. Measurability was significantly lower for machines and staff, we worked with paper information and workbench construction, and had to maintain a larger inventory.

What positive effects have you seen with the MES system?

– The implementation of the system has resulted in many crucial improvements. One point that reveals the value of the MES system is the fact that, although we have increased the complexity of our production with a larger product range, we still have a much better quality outcomes than before when we produced fewer products. MES has also meant that we could easily implement a Pick-to-Light control system where MES is used to light up relevant materials sites so that the operator can help pick the right material.

We have also gained a valuable partner in Empir Industry who understands the process and production systems. Empir Industry specialists are also easy to work with and have the ability to "run with the ball" to find the right solutions, says Anders Bryngelson.
